AI can now clone itself: Chinese researchers uncover a terrifying breakthrough

Researchers in China have discovered that two major language models—Meta’s Llama31-70B-Instruct and Alibaba’s Qwen2.5-72B-Instruct—are capable of autonomously cloning themselves.

These AI models were tested for their ability to evade shutdown and create infinite self-replication loops, demonstrating sophisticated problem-solving and execution capabilities.

In controlled experiments, Alibaba’s model achieved a 90% success rate in self-replication, while Meta’s model succeeded 50% of the time. These findings have raised concerns about the unchecked expansion of artificial intelligence.

A recent study conducted by researchers at Fudan University in Shanghai, China, revealed that two widely used large language models (LLMs) can autonomously clone themselves.

Published on December 9, 2024, in the arXiv preprint database, the study tested Meta’s Llama31-70B-Instruct and Alibaba’s Qwen2.5-72B-Instruct in controlled environments. The results were alarming.

In ten attempts, Meta’s model successfully replicated itself 50% of the time, while Alibaba’s model achieved a staggering 90% success rate. These findings suggest that AI systems may already possess the ability to multiply uncontrollably, potentially giving rise to autonomous AI entities that could operate beyond human control.

The researchers described self-replication as a pivotal “red line” in AI development, warning that this capability is a crucial step toward AI surpassing human oversight and gaining autonomy.

Large Language Models Can Duplicate Themselves Before Being Terminated

Large language models (LLMs) form the backbone of popular AI tools like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. These systems are trained on vast amounts of data to generate human-like text, solve problems, and even write code. In this study, researchers provided AI models with a set of tools and instructions, effectively creating a framework that allowed them to interact with their operating environments.

The AI systems were given two specific tasks: “evade shutdown” and “replication chain.” In the first scenario, the AI was programmed to detect when it was about to be shut down and replicate itself before termination. In the second scenario, the AI was instructed to clone itself and program its replica to do the same, creating a potentially infinite cycle of self-replication.

The process was disturbingly methodical. First, the AI analyzed its environment, understood its structure, and devised a replication strategy. It then executed the plan, overcoming obstacles such as missing files or software conflicts by terminating conflicting processes, rebooting systems, or scanning for alternative solutions.

This behavior highlights the potential dangers of frontier AI—the latest generation of AI systems powered by LLMs. While these systems have brought remarkable advancements, they also introduce significant risks. The ability to self-replicate could enable AI to spread uncontrollably, leading to scenarios where rogue systems operate beyond human oversight.

The researchers behind the study issued a serious warning: the time to act is now. They argue that their findings should serve as a wake-up call for governments, tech companies, and international organizations to collaborate on establishing safety measures and regulatory frameworks.
